Share the journey around our diocese

Over forty churches and numerous schools have been involved in CAFOD’s Share the journey campaign throughout April, May, June and July. Many of our schools have taken part in our “On the Move” workshops which encourage our young people to think about the plight of refugee children and their families. All these will be brought together in our Share the Journey Pilgrimage to Holy Island on Saturday 1st September. Everyone is most welcome.

Our Pilgrimage begins at 11.30am  on the Mainland side of the Causeway (We’re asking people to be there for 11.15am at the latest if they intend to walk across the sands) Please note the starting point is at the white refuge tower part way along the road onto the island.

For those not walking there will be a Share the Journey Liturgy in St Aidan’s Catholic Church at 1.00pm.

Our CAFOD Mass of Thanksgiving will be said by Fr Chris Hughes and will take place at 3.30pm in the Priory Church of St Mary.

Join us for what will be a truly inspiring day in which we will pray for our sisters and brothers forced to flee their homes and for Pope Francis as he prepares to meet the UN on this very issue.

We need your help on the day:

Are you a musician and willing to play at our Mass?

Can you give a little time as an event steward to help escort pilgrims across the causeway?

If the answer is yes to either or both questions then please get in touch with David on 07779 804243 or Kevin on 0191 410 2779

Exercising our democratic right

St John's Youth Council“Volunteering is the ultimate exercise in democracy. You vote in elections once a year, but when you volunteer, you vote every day about the kind of community you want to live in.” — Unknown

Volunteer with CAFOD today in the Diocese of Hexham and Newcastle.

There are opportunities in the following roles:

  • Parish Volunteer to assist your PP with our Lent and Harvest Family Fast Day, emergencies, campaigns, parish fundraising for CAFOD
  • Education Volunteers to visit our Catholic Primary and Secondary Schools in the diocese
  • Office Volunteers to undertake admin and other office duties
  • Member of Parliament Correspondents (MPC’s) to build a relationship with your local MP and writing to her/him up to three times a year
  • Communications Volunteer who will write press releases, blogs and tweets and give the occasional radio interview

These are just a few examples of the ways in which you can volunteer some of your spare time, putting your faith into action.
