Walking the Pilgrim’s Way

On Saturday 1 September well over two hundred people joined us from around the diocese and from the dioceses of Middlesbrough and Nottingham for our CAFOD Share the Journey Pilgrimage to Holy Island. Almost thirty parishes were represented on the day.

Sixty people walked the actual Pilgrim’s Way across the sands at low tide onto the island, reflecting on the plight of refugees as they walked along.  Others met in St Aidan’s catholic church to participate in our Share the Journey liturgy. The day concluded with Holy Mass celebrated in a packed St Mary’s Priory church by Fr Chris Hughes who gave a most inspiring homily challenging us to get involved with projects supporting our sisters and brothers who have had to flee their homes.  Fr Chris said “It’s both an honour and a privilege to be involved with the pilgrimage and to celebrate Mass with such like minded people”

A number of participants said that they thought it was “the best one we’ve ever done”.

Thanks to Maggie CPC from Nottingham Diocese for taking some fantastic photos during the day.

Over forty churches and numerous schools have been involved in CAFOD’s Share the journey campaign throughout April, May, June and July. Many of our schools have taken part in our “On the Move” workshops which encourage our young people to think about the plight of refugee children and their families. All these will be brought together in our Share the Journey Pilgrimage to Holy Island on Saturday 1st September. Everyone is most welcome.

Our Pilgrimage begins at 11.30am  on the Mainland side of the Causeway (We’re asking people to be there for 11.15am at the latest if they intend to walk across the sands) Please note the starting point is at the white refuge tower part way along the road onto the island.

For those not walking there will be a Share the Journey Liturgy in St Aidan’s Catholic Church at 1.00pm.

Our CAFOD Mass of Thanksgiving will be said by Fr Chris Hughes and will take place at 3.30pm in the Priory Church of St Mary.

Join us for what will be a truly inspiring day in which we will pray for our sisters and brothers forced to flee their homes and for Pope Francis as he prepares to meet the UN on this very issue.

We need your help on the day:

Are you a musician and willing to play at our Mass?

Can you give a little time as an event steward to help escort pilgrims across the causeway?

If the answer is yes to either or both questions then please get in touch with David on 07779 804243 or Kevin on 0191 410 2779
